Alex Trebek: From "Jeopardy" to politics?
(CBS News) He's seen by over 25 million viewers every week as the host of TV's top quiz show, "Jeopardy," but Alex Trebek isn't content to just have all the answers. He would like to ask some of the questions, too -- in a presidential debate.
Alex Trebek: His popularity not in jeopardy
"What bothers me about some of the political debates that I have seen is that... it's all so predictable," Trabek said Monday on "CBS This Morning." "I want somebody from left field to come in and say, 'hey, you know, what's your vision for America? Nobody talks about that anymore."
So far, Trebek hasn't had any offers to host a debate but he would like more input from ordinary citizens all over the country. He would also like to hear more from the candidates than whether or not they want to raise or lower taxes.
"What kind of a society do we really want in this country?," he said. "Is this a capitalist society? Well, I don't think so. We have a lot of socialist programs going on. So, what do you see in our future?"
Trebek is still going strong in his 28th year as host of "Jeopardy." It premiered in 1984 and has won over 29 Daytime Emmy Awards, with Trebek taking home five for Outstanding Game Show Host.
Now, Trebek is being honored with a prestigious Peabody Award for his work on the show.
"Well, you know, we've won so many Emmys -- more Emmys than any other quiz or game show on television," he said. "And yet there seems to be more excitement about the Peabody. I did not realize how prestigious it is."
Trebek will also be hosting the National Geographic Bee, a contest designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, and increase public awareness about geography.
