Ahlittia North Update: Matthew Flugence faces first-degree murder charge in La. girl's stabbing death

(CBS/AP) HARVEY, La. - Jefferson Parish, La. deputies have captured the suspect wanted in the stabbing death of 6-year-old Ahlittia North.

Sheriff Newell Normand says Matthew Flugence was arrested Tuesday night while walking near the West Bank Expressway in Westwego. Flugence faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of North, and there is an outstanding warrant on a charge of sexual battery involving an 11-year old Harvey girl.

Normand says the 20-year-old man was taken into custody without incident. Deputies say at the time of his arrest he was carrying a knife. He had been named as a suspect Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday, Fluegence was ordered held without bond, according to CBS affiliate WWLTV.

North disappeared late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Her body was found early Tuesday morning in a trash bin just feet from the Harvey apartment where she lived.

According to the station, Flugence, the nephew of Ahlittia's stepfather, would often babysit the girl. "If you can't trust a family member, who can you trust?" North's stepfather said, according to the station.

Authorities say the little girl was found stabbed multiple times.

The suspect's older brother, Russell Flugence, was reportedly arrested for obstructing justice on Tuesday. Russell Flugence allegedly withheld information that implicated his brother in Ahlittia's murder.
