AARP Magazine: Valerie Bertinelli Engaged to Tom Vitale

NEW YORK (CBS) Valerie Bertinelli is engaged to businessman Tom Vitale, the actress told AARP magazine in its July/August issue.

Vitale proposed in Florence, Italy, during a recent vacation the couple took there. They have been together for six years.

"We'd talked about getting married," Bertinelli told the magazine, "but I was still shocked. It was sweet when he asked me, because he was so scared. I was like, 'Are you kidding me?'"

"I've never had a male friend like I have with Tom...Mature love doesn't mean you have to be mature all the time -- we definitely have our immature moments," she continued. "But when disagreements come up, we're able to talk in a way tha's not attacking, and we'll still love one another."

A wedding is set for this fall, but she's leaving the planning up to her fiance.

"He already knows the different kinds of bells he wants to go off during the ceremony," she said.

The couple met in 2004 after their previous marriages ended. Bertinelli was previously married to rocker Eddie Van Halen, and the two have a 19-year-old son, Wolfie. Vitale has four children who are now between the ages of 11 and 19.
