'A Million Thanks'
Shauna Fleming, 16, is a sophomore student at Lutheran High School in Orange, Calif., and the founder of http://www.amillionthanks.org. In March 2004, she invited 1,100 schoolmates to join her in "A Million Thanks," a grassroots campaign to collect and distribute 1 million letters of appreciation to current and past military men and women at home and overseas.
She talked about the project on The Early Show Tuesday and invited viewers to get in on the project by going to the Web site.
In late October 2004, Shauna reached her original objective of obtaining a million letters and presented that the millionth letter to President Bush at the White House Nov. 17.
Her latest goal is to collect 400,000 more expressions of gratitude for a total of 1.4 million greetings, symbolically representing one letter for every troop serving on active duty.
Last fall, Shauna was the recipient of one of CosmoGIRL!'s 2004, Born to Lead Awards. She continues to maintain her Web site and is the host of her own Internet radio talk show called "A Million Thanks Radio".
Shauna also has been asked to be the spokesperson for National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) this May.
