8-year-old says teacher saved him in Conn. shooting
An eight-year-old student described how a teacher saved him from bullets at his Newtown, Conn., elementary school Friday morning, where at least 27 people were killed by a gunman.
The student told WCBS-TV's Lou Young he was on the way to the school's office when he saw bullets.
"I saw some of the bullets going down the hall that I was right next to and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom," the student said.
"It sounded like someone was kicking a door," he said of the bullets.
At around 9:40 a.m., a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary school. At least 18 of the deaths are children and an unknown number are injured.
CBS News correspondent John Miller reports that preliminary information indicates the gunman, who was dead on the scene, was a father to one of the students and is in his 20s.
Students were taken to a nearby firehouse and are being reunited with their parents. Residents expressed shock over the violence in what they consider a quiet and safe town.
"It was horrendous," parent Brenda Lebinski told Reuters. She rushed to the school, where her daughter is in the third grade, as soon as she heard the news.
"Everyone was in hysterics -- parents, students," she said. "There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied."
