The oil spill triggered by an explosion at the BP well site was the "worst environmental disaster the U.S. has ever faced," said White House energy advisor Carol Browner. Meanwhile, Hayward's repeated media gaffes made him an embarrassment to the energy giant, which announced in May that it was demoting him and shipping him off to Russia.
