340-ton rock traveling, slowly, to L.A. art museum

(AP) LOS ANGELES - A 340-ton rock has begun its 105-mile journey to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The massive boulder left a quarry in Riverside's rural Jurupa Valley at about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday aboard a specially built flatbed trailer the length of a football field.

The rock was selected by acclaimed earth artist Michael Heizer to be the centerpiece of his latest creation "Levitated Mass."

The truck will travel no faster than 5 to 8 mph and only late at night and in the early morning.

The circuitous trip is expected to take 11 days, with the rock scheduled to roll up to the museum's back door sometime before dawn on March 10.
