3-Year-Old Brings Pot to Pre-School; What Did He Know and When Did He Know It?
LAKE CITY, Fla. (CBS) A Florida pre-school teacher made a shocking discovery Monday: two bags of marijuana on one of her 3-year-old students.
Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputies and child welfare officials are looking into where the boy got the pot, reports WJXT.
Authorities investigated the incident as a case of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors, but because of the boy's age no charges were filed (good job there!).
According to the incident report, the pre-schooler showed the illegal substance to a classmate at Niblack Elementary School.
The classmate - who may have sensed something was wrong with this type of show and tell - then told the teacher.
School officials searched the boyd and found two small baggies containing less than 20 grams of marijuana. He told authorities that it belonged to his father, says WJXT.
"It was kind of shocking because you never think anything like that would happen," Principal William Murphy told WJXT. "Kids pick up things, and so you never know where they picked it up from."
The incident reports says the child was suspended for remainder of the day and was released to his mother who claimed she did not know where her son found the marijuana.
The Sheriff's Office searched the boy's home, but did not find any evidence of illegal drugs or paraphernalia.
"I don't think this kid knew what he had on him -- that he knew it was marijuana, knew that it was illegal, knew it was a dangerous drug," a Sheriff's Office spokesman told WJXT. "If it came from home, if it came from the street, if it came from the school bus... we just don't know where it came from at this point."
