3 workers rescued after NYC building collapse

NEW YORK - Firefighters scrambled to rescue three construction workers after a building under construction in Brighton Beach collapsed, WCBS reports.

The Fire Department of New York says five people were injured in the collapse at the five-story building in Brooklyn. One person is in critical condition. Two are in serious condition.

The three workers were initially trapped under the rubble. At least two of the workers were seen being brought out on stretchers. One worker may have been in cardiac arrest at the time he was pulled out. Another rescued worker was moving his head and arms as he was lowered to safety.

The collapse occurred shortly before 3 p.m. By about 3:25 p.m., all the trapped workers were believed to be rescued.

The five-story building at 2922 Brighton 5th Street was under construction. Apparently, the fourth story collapsed, sending the lower floors cascading down.

Numerous firefighters responded to the scene and dug furiously through the rubble by hand. A blowtorch was deployed to cut through the pile.
