3 in custody in Brooklyn shooting that killed unborn child
BROOKLYN, New York -- Three people are in custody in connection with a Monday drive-by shooting in Brooklyn that left five others injured -- including a pregnant woman whose unborn child died, reports CBS New York.
Nineteen-year-old Marquise Frederick, who police had previously identified as a suspect in the shooting, is reportedly among those arrested.
The gunfire broke out in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood around 11 p.m. Monday. The station reported that two men pulled up in an SUV in front of a three-story apartment building, got out of the vehicle and allegedly opened fire before fleeing.
CBS New York reported that the victims are all between the ages of 19 and 22 -- three women and two men. The pregnant woman, 19-year-old Special Houston, was struck three times, reports the station.
"I heard four bangs in the distance, it sounded like it could have been a shotgun, and then about five minutes later I heard a bunch of sirens," a witness told the station. "It's a big concern, it's been a very quiet area for a long time now."
Houston remains in critical condition, reports the station. The other victims were listed in stable condition.
Police reportedly said the shooting was retaliation for an earlier shooting in another Brooklyn neighborhood.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said the victims appear to have been innocent bystanders.
"It looked like it was a group outside on a warm summer evening," he told the station. "People were just out relaxing when this car pulled up."
