2 Oakland officers implicated in underage sex scandal resign
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Two of four Northern California police officers implicated in a sexual misconduct case have resigned.
Police haven't released names of the officers or details of the allegations, saying in a statement that the investigation requires confidentiality and "only those preliminary details that do not compromise the investigation can be released at this time."
Sources told CBS San Francisco the probe centers around a young woman who recently began revealing details of her relationships with officers on her Facebook page.
The woman, now either 18 or 19 years old, is believed to have had sex with potentially dozens of police officers beginning when she was 16. Such acts would be a crime under the state's statutory rape laws.
The department said last week an officer's suicide prompted the investigation.
Officer Brendan O'Brien killed himself in September, a little more than a year after police say his wife also took her life. Oakland police Chief Sean Whent said last week police investigated the apparent suicide of O'Brien's wife, Irma Huerta-Lopez, at the couple's apartment in the in the Oakland hills on June 16, 2014, to see if it could have been a homicide but senior investigators determined that it was a suicide.
Oakland police officials wouldn't specify how O'Brien's suicide led to the sexual misconduct probe or give any other details. Investigators told the station O'Brien left a note that lead to an initial internal affairs investigation.
The Alameda County District Attorney's office is also investigating the suicides, the sexual misconduct allegations, and the city's investigatory process.
The alleged misconduct was initially flagged by the federal judge who oversees the police department as part of a lawsuit settlement.
The Oakland Police Department announced the resignations Wednesday. The two others remain on administrative leave.
A police internal affairs investigation will continue, an Oakland Police spokeswoman told CBS San Francisco.
