2 Calif. teens arrested for conspiracy to commit murder after school shooting rumors
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. -- Police say that two high school students have been arrested for conspiracy to commit murder after rumors surfaced of a possible school shooting.
CBS Los Angeles reports that a 14-year-old male and 14-year-old female were taken into custody around 3 p.m. Monday following an investigation into rumors of a possible shooting at Los Osos High School.
According to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, the school's resource officer, Deputy Melinda Young, interviewed 27 students and two faculty members during the course of the investigation. One of the two student suspects allegedly claimed to have been a victim of the possible threat.
"While Deputy Young was consensually looking through one of the students' phone, she located evidence regarding how the rumors got started," read the sheriff's statement.
On April 20, Deputy Young confronted the male student about the texting and spreading of rumors. That student was detained for further questioning, and the female, who was not in school, was brought into the Rancho Cucamonga station to be interviewed by Deputy Young.
Both juveniles were subsequently arrested and booked into San Bernardino Juvenile Hall for conspiracy to commit murder.
They are scheduled to be arraigned later this week, according to CBS Los Angeles.
