14-Year-Old Calif. Boy Accused of Repeatedly Stabbing Girl, 13, and Her Baby Brother
VACAVILLE, Calif. (CBS/AP) A 14-year-old Northern California boy faces charges of attempted murder and sexual assault after police say he raped and stabbed a 13-year-old girl more than 30 times, and also attacked her baby brother.
According to police, the victims were home alone and sleeping next to one another when the suspect broke into their Vacaville home early Sunday and began stabbing the young girl in the back, according to local station KTVU.
"Unfortunately the 13-year-old was sexually assaulted during the course of this," Sgt. Denise Quatman of the Vacaville Police told KTVU. "When the 18-month-old woke up, he was also assaulted and stabbed."
The baby was stabbed more than 10 times, police said. Both victims remain hospitalized, and are expected to survive.
The 14-year-old suspect is an acquaintance of the two victims' older brother, according to Mark Mazzaferro, a Vacaville city spokesman.
Sgt. Denis Quatman told the Vacaville Reporter that the girl showed "great courage" by somehow getting the suspect to fall asleep, enabling her to grab her brother and escape to a neighbor's house to call 911. A SWAT team later found the suspect asleep in the victims' home and arrested him without incident.
He was being held in Solano County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and sexual assault. The suspect's mother maintains his innocence, claiming he was framed by three other teens.
Mazzaferro said police are still searching for a motive for the alleged attacks, as they tried to determine whether the teen force his way into the house or entered through an unlocked door.
The Associated Press is not disclosing the name of the victims' father to protect the identity of the 13-year-old girl. The fatherreportedly shares joint custody of the children with this ex-wife.
