1, 2, 3, 4 Red Sox Win Some More

Although the Red Sox are scoring runs in bunches, Boston manager Jimy Williams says the key is still pitching.

Nomar Garciaparra and Darren Bragg each hit three-run homers Tuesday night as the Red Sox won their fourth straight, 11-3 over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Boston's winning streak began on Saturday in New York when Bret Saberhagen beat the Yankees.

"It always goes back to starting pitching, they set the tone," Williams said. "Saberhagen's game was pivotal."

Steve Avery (2-1) got the win despite walking six in five innings. He allowed three runs and three hits.

"He had good stuff out there tonight," Williams said. "He kept us in the game."

Garciaparra, who broke a 5-5 tie Monday night with a two-run homer off Randy Myers in the ninth, hit his seventh in the fourth to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.

"We're not going to get out of a slump because of one guy. The starting pitching has been key and everybody's contributed," Garciaparra said. "We got key hits tonight and Avery did a great job."

Troy O'Leary added a solo shot for Boston, which has scored 36 runs in its four-game winning streak.

"We've scored a lot of runs but are pitchers have been throwing good and it starts from there," Mo Vaughn said.

The Blue Jays have lost three straight and are 1-5 on their current 11-game homestand.

"Anybody that thought we were going to play .800 ball the rest of the year is crazy," Randy Myers said. "You normally get two winning streaks and two losing steaks in a year."

Mark Dalesandro put the Blue Jays up 2-0 in the the second with a two-run single.

The Red Sox scored four runs off Blue Jays starter Chris Carpenter (1-2) in the third. Darren Lewis had an RBI ground-rule double, and with a runner on, Garciaparra homered.

"It seems like it's one pitch that gives the other team a big inning," Carpenter said. "It wasn't what I wanted I just hung the slider in there."

Mike Stanley's RBI single cut it to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Hatteberg added a run for the Red Sox in the fourth with a run-scoring single.

Boston added five more runs in the eighth to make it 10-3. O'Leary hit his 13th homer, Lou Merloni had an RBI double and Bragg hit his fourth.

Vaughn added an RBI double in the ninth for the Red Sox.

Carpenter gave up seven runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings.
