This year some sales start at 6 p.m. Thursday. That also means workers and shoppers will be leaving the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day to head to stores.

Inside a huge green house in Lakeville, thousands of poinsettias are being packaged and ready to go. Dale Bachman, president and CEO of Bachman's Floral, says the plants are destined for the Twin Cities metro area. "Our crop this year is about 85,000 total pots," Bachman said. The most popular color is red, but Bachman says they have 32 other varieties as well.

Butterball, based out of North Carolina, told retailers that orders for fresh 16-pound turkeys and larger have been cut in half. The shortage is nationwide. Woody Hunt, manager of Rainbow Foods in St. Louis Park, says 40 years ago, Butterball was like the "Cadillac of turkeys." "Everybody wanted a Butterball, and if you didn't have a Butterball on your table you couldn't brag to your neighbors that you had the best turkey," Hunt said.

It is of course not just Target; almost every major retailer this year is opening on Thanksgiving Day. Even one of last year's big holdouts -- Macy's -- will open at 6 p.m.
Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away, and a northern Minnesota farmer will be in the holiday spotlight. John Burkel of Badger will be presenting his turkeys to President Obama at the White House.
