Indians Beat Twins 5-1

The Cleveland Indians moved into the AL wild-card lead on the next-to-last scheduled day of the regular season, beating the Minnesota Twins 5-1 Saturday behind Scott Kazmir's strong start to extend their winning streak to nine. Seeking their first postseason appearance since 2007, the Indians (91-70) took a one-game lead over Tampa Bay and Texas (both 90-71), who both lost Saturday. Cleveland is assured of at least a tie for the AL wild card. With three teams seeking the two wild cards, Sunday's results could decide the matter or lead to one or two tiebreaker games at the start of next week.

Twins Rally Late To Beat Tigers 4-3 In 11

Josmil Pinto hit an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame 12 strikeouts by Justin Verlander to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Monday night. The Tigers led 3-0 in the eighth, but Jose Veras gave up RBI doubles to Eduardo Escobar and Ryan Doumit. Brian Dozier led off the ninth with a tying homer against previously perfect closer Joaquin Benoit. Dozier opened the 11th with a single off Luke Putkonen (1-2) and advanced on a wild pitch. Pinto punched a single to right field to give manager Ron Gardenhire his 998th career victory.

Twins Shut Down Mauer For Rest Of Season

The Minnesota Twins are playing it safe with All-Star catcher Joe Mauer after having seen up close the damage concussions can do to a player. The Twins shut Mauer down for the rest of the season on Monday, saying it wasn't worth the risk to try to get him back on the field with the team far out of contention and Mauer still experiencing some symptoms of a concussion he sustained on Aug. 19. The Twins have seven games left in what has been another miserable season for them, and Mauer's injury only adds to the disappointment. He was hurt when he took a foul ball off his mask against the New York Mets and hasn't played since.

A's Beat Twins 9-1, Lower Magic Number To 1

The Oakland Athletics lowered their magic number to one for clinching their second straight AL West title, beating the Minnesota Twins 9-1 Saturday behind the pitching of Jarrod Parker and hitting of Alberto Callaspo. The A's have won 12 of 15 and are 16 of their last 21, opening a season-high 7½-game lead over second-place Texas entering Saturday. Texas was Kansas City later in the day. Oakland players filed quietly off the field to a standing ovation from the Oakland Coliseum crowd after reliever Jerry Blevins got the final out.

White Sox Score 7 In 1st, Coast To Win Over Twins

Erik Johnson pitched six scoreless innings to earn his first major league victory, and the Chicago White Sox scored seven runs in the first and coasted to a 12-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. The White Sox, who had lost six straight and 15 of 17, broke out of their offensive funk against Liam Hendriks and the Twins. Chicago scored a season high in runs and posted its biggest margin of victory this year. After not having led since beating the Tigers 5-1 a week earlier, the White Sox had six hits in the first. Alejandro De Aza and Alexei Ramirez both reached base twice and scored in the inning.

Plouffe Leads Twins Over Angels 6-3

Trevor Plouffe went 2 for 3 and drove in the tying and go-ahead runs as the Minnesota Twins snapped a 10-game home losing streak with a 6-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Plouffe's two-run, two-out double in the fifth inning tied the game 3-3, and his bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the seventh made it 4-3 as the Twins won at home for the first time since Aug. 15, avoiding the longest home losing streak since the franchise started in Washington in 1901. The home skid was the Twins' longest since moving from Washington in 1961. The Senators lost 10 straight home games in 1957.

Blue Jays Rout Twins 11-2

Adam Lind hit a pair of three-run homers and J.A. Happ snapped a three-game losing streak, leading the Toronto Blue Jays over the Minnesota Twins 11-2 on Saturday night. Lind's first home run highlighted a five-run first inning a night after Toronto posted five runs in the third frame in a victory over Minnesota. Lind went deep again in the eighth for his second multi-homer game this season and 10th of his career. Happ (4-5), who entered the game with a 7.71 ERA in his last three outings, allowed an unearned run on five hits while striking out four.

Dickey, Blue Jays Hang On To Beat Twins 6-5

R.A. Dickey pitched into the seventh inning for Toronto, and the Blue Jays hung on for a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Dickey (12-12) won his third straight start, giving up seven hits and three runs to a Twins team he was a reliever for in 2009. He struck out four and walked one. Jose Reyes reached base all four times and sparked a five-run second against Mike Pelfrey (5-11) with an RBI single. Brett Lawrie hit a two-run single and Moises Sierra followed with a two-run double in that inning.

Mauer Still Not Clear Of Concussion Symptoms

Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer has not cleared his concussion symptoms yet. Mauer was missing from the lineup for the 16th straight game Friday, when the Twins started a series against Toronto. The All-Star said after taking batting practice he had "a good day," but the recovery process has been slow. Mauer said there's no timetable for his return but that he hopes to be back "sooner than later." He was hurt on Aug. 19, hit in the facemask by a foul ball.

Correia Pitches Twins To 4-2 Win At Texas

Kevin Correia pitched seven strong innings and the Minnesota Twins clinched their first series victory at Texas in four years, beating the AL West-leading Rangers 4-2 on Sunday. Correia (9-10) allowed one run and scattered five hits. The right-hander struck out two and got 14 outs on the ground, including a pair of double plays. Rangers starter Travis Blackley (2-2) was gone after giving up three consecutive run-scoring hits with one out in the fifth.

Twins Place Deduno, Ramirez On DL

The Minnesota Twins have placed right-hander Samuel Deduno and outfielder Wilkin Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list. Deduno left his previous start against the Royals early with soreness in his right shoulder. Ramirez fractured his left shin after fouling a ball off his leg in the fifth inning of Thursday's game against the Royals. The Twins have recalled left-hander Pedro Hernandez from Double-A New Britain and outfielder Darin Mastroianni from Triple-A Rochester to fill the open roster spots.

Hendriks Loses Again As Twins Fall 7-2

Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis hit two-run homers, Zach McAllister won his third straight start and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-2 on Saturday night. The win moved the Indians into third place in the crowded American League wild card race. Santana's two-run homer in the first got the Indians off to a quick start. Kipnis, who snapped an 0 for 19 skid with a first-inning single, homered in the third. Both home runs came off starter Liam Hendriks (0-2), who has lost 12 of his 13 career decisions.

Joe Mauer To Remain On Concussion List

The Minnesota Twins say All-Star catcher Joe Mauer is not going to be activated from the seven-day concussion list when the team begins a homestand next week. Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said doctors have told Mauer to rest until at least Tuesday, the day he would be eligible to come off the concussion disabled list. Mauer was placed on the list earlier this week after he became dizzy during his pregame routine. The Twins sent him back to Minnesota from Detroit, and the 2009 AL MVP visited a specialist at the Mayo Clinic on Friday.

Joe Mauer Recovering From Concussion

Minnesota Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer has been given permission by a concussion specialist to begin a light exercise program. Mauer was placed on baseball's seven-day concussion list earlier this week after he became dizzy during his pregame routine. The Twins sent him back to Minnesota from Detroit, and the 2009 AL MVP visited a specialist at the Mayo Clinic on Friday. "They were satisfied with where he's at," Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said.
