Price Sparkles In 5-Inning Outing Against Twins

David Price struck out eight in five innings, and Yunel Escobar and David DeJesus drove in runs off Ricky Nolasco, helping the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Tuesday. Price allowed one run and three hits in his second spring training start, surrendering a solo homer to Jason Kubel leading off the second inning. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner, who signed a $14 million, one-year contract after being the subject of trade talks, walked one, hit a batter and also was charged with a balk during a 75-pitch outing.

Parmelee's 3-Run HR Sends Twins Past Red Sox 6-2

Chris Parmelee's three-run homer off left-handed reliever Jose Mijares broke open a close game in the sixth inning on Saturday, and the Minnesota Twins went on to beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2. Parmelee hit just .172 against lefties last year. He opened the season as the Twins' everyday right fielder but gradually lost playing time until being sent back to Triple-A at the All-Star break. The former first-round draft pick is out of minor league options.

Gardenhire Returns To See Twins Through Troubles

On the day before his 12th season as manager of the Minnesota Twins ended, Ron Gardenhire woke up and came to the ballpark not knowing if he would be back for a 13th year. The Twins were finishing up a third straight dreadful season, limping toward a second straight 66-96 record, and Gardenhire was in the final year of his contract. Minnesota is home for Gardenhire, and the possibility of uprooting and taking his family to another town, to take an offer from another team that surely would have come, was wearing him out. After a 5-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians for defeat No. 95, GM Terry Ryan finally let Gardenhire know of his plans.

Twins Finalize Contracts With Pelfrey, Suzuki

The Minnesota Twins have signed right-hander Mike Pelfrey and catcher Kurt Suzuki. The contracts were finalized Monday. Pelfrey agreed more than a week ago to an $11 million, two-year deal. Suzuki agreed Friday to a $2.75 million, one-year deal. Pelfrey went 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA in 29 starts last season, his first after Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his elbow. He'll return to the rotation with Kevin Correia, with Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes now at the top. One spot will be open in spring training.

Pirates, Twins Complete Morneau Trade

The Pittsburgh Pirates have completed their trade for Justin Morneau by sending right-handed pitcher Duke Welker to the Minnesota Twins. The final portion of the Aug. 31 trade was announced on Saturday. The Pirates sent outfielder Alex Presley and a player to be named later to the Twins for Morneau to give them some extra pop at the plate and a reliable defensive first baseman. The 27-year-old Welker went 3-4, with a 3.57 ERA and nine saves in 48 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

Twins Go Out On Sour Note With 5-1 Loss To Indians

After the Minnesota Twins fumbled, stumbled and whiffed their way through one last miserable defeat in a season full of them, many of the players walked up to manager Ron Gardenhire to give him one last handshake or hug. They had to do it on Sunday, because they know they may not get another chance. The Twins committed three errors and struck out 16 times in a 5-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians in the season finale, a game that could mark the end of Gardenhire's 12-year tenure in Minnesota.
