Northstar Commuter Rail Line Ridership Increases

More people are riding the Northstar Commuter Rail Line between Big Lake and Minneapolis. Ridership increased 15 percent during the first six months of 2013, compared with the same period last year. Metro Transit made permanent a fare reduction in May that lowered most Northstar tickets by $1. A new station in Ramsey and significant ridership increases at the Big Lake and Coon Rapids stations offset decreases from the Anoka and Fridley stations.

Thousands Attend Rally For Trayvon Martin In Mpls.

Thousands packed the People's Square outside the Government Center in downtown Minneapolis to protest the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin Monday evening. People from across Minnesota came to the rally to support the civil rights prosecution of Zimmerman in a scene similar to rallies being held around the country. For 22-year-old Kyle Mason, the circumstances surrounding the Zimmerman verdict were nothing out of the ordinary. "The recent events of Trayvon Martin really bothered me but they don't surprise me, which makes it even more bothersome," Mason said.

3 Mississippi Locks In Mpls. Reopened

Three of Minneapolis' locks on the Mississippi River have been reopened to recreational boating traffic Friday morning, two days after reopening to commercial vessels. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, the Upper and Lower St. Anthony locks in downtown Minneapolis and Dam 1 near Minnehaha Park were originally closed to recreation traffic on June 24 when river flows exceeded 30,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) - over twice the speed of the

High Water Levels Dash Many July Fourth Plans

A frustrating Fourth of July is in store for some Twin Cities families. Several lakes and rivers have dangerously high water levels in addition to storm debris floating on or just below the surface. The water is moving so fast that the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis and near Minnehaha Park has been off limits to all boaters for the last ten days. The locks for commercial barges just reopened Wednesday, but recreational boating is still prohibited.
