Mike Aviles's two-out single in the ninth inning gave the Cleveland Indians a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night. Asdrubal Cabrera led off the inning with a double against Casey Fien (3-1). The ball was hit over the head of infielder Eduardo Escobar, who misjudged the ball that landed on the warning track.

Escobar, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, connected on a 1-0 pitch from Axford (0-3), driving it over the wall in right for his first homer since June 20 and fourth of his career in 344 at-bats.

After the Minnesota Twins fumbled, stumbled and whiffed their way through one last miserable defeat in a season full of them, many of the players walked up to manager Ron Gardenhire to give him one last handshake or hug. They had to do it on Sunday, because they know they may not get another chance. The Twins committed three errors and struck out 16 times in a 5-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians in the season finale, a game that could mark the end of Gardenhire's 12-year tenure in Minnesota.
The Cleveland Indians moved into the AL wild-card lead on the next-to-last scheduled day of the regular season, beating the Minnesota Twins 5-1 Saturday behind Scott Kazmir's strong start to extend their winning streak to nine. Seeking their first postseason appearance since 2007, the Indians (91-70) took a one-game lead over Tampa Bay and Texas (both 90-71), who both lost Saturday. Cleveland is assured of at least a tie for the AL wild card. With three teams seeking the two wild cards, Sunday's results could decide the matter or lead to one or two tiebreaker games at the start of next week.
