State fire officials say a large grass fire near Waseca is contained Monday morning after burning nearly 2,000 acres and injuring three people. The fire was reported at around noon Sunday and it took eight hours to contain.

Fire officials say mostly grassland has burned, pushing thick, dark smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said the fire impacted air quality along the Interstate 35 corridor from Waseca to the Twin Cities.

Waseca was part of the area under a red flag warning Sunday. The National Weather Service said conditions in the area were ideal for spreading fires and residents should avoid burning while the warning is in effect.

A state trooper at the scene told WCCO that six to eight homes were evacuated out of precaution.

Officials later updated that three people were injured, including one resident and two firefighters.
