Xcel Clears Federal Hurdle For License Renewal
RED WING, Minn. (AP) -- Xcel Energy has cleared an environmental hurdle in its request to renew the license for its Prairie Island nuclear plant near Red Wing.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says there's no impact on the environment that would preclude renewing the license for the twin-reactor plant.
Xcel, of Minneapolis, is asking for another 20 years on the license. The nearby Prairie Island Indian Community opposes the license extension. The St. Paul Pioneer Press says the operating license for Units 1 and 2 expires in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
