Xcel: Beware Of Scam Saying Obama Will Pay Your Utility Bills
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO)— Xcel Energy is warning its customers of a seemingly national scam that claims President Barack Obama will pay your utility bills.
According to Xcel, the scam works like this: The scam artists tell potential victims that they are giving out credits or applying payments to utility bills. Individuals are told they can make bill payments using a supplied but phony bank routing number. Individuals only get that number, however, after giving the scam artists their personal information.
The scam artists are contacting potential victims via telephone, Twitter and texting, Xcel said. Fliers have also been reported.
Xcel customers affected by the scam are asked to call 1-800-895-4999 and report it.
And if you gave out personal information due to the scam, call your credit card provider, Xcel advised.
