Wyoming, Minn. Couple Delivers Baby Off Of Interstate
WYOMING (WCCO) -- A Wyoming, Minn. couple expecting the birth of their second child didn't think he would come into the world as quickly as he did.
Rylan Kensy King was a week overdue when mom, Shana, started having contractions at 2 a.m. Thursday. She was in the car within 20 minutes, on the way to Hudson Hospital with her husband Brandon at the wheel. She says she knew they would never make the 50-minute drive before delivery.
"As soon as we went from the 694 to 94 exchange I could tell we weren't going to make it," said Shana.
"I said, 'no, we are almost there, we're only about 8 miles away' and she said, 'no, you don't understand. We're not gonna make it. He's coming right now!'" said Brandon.
Shana King believes they left their home by 2:20 a.m. and Rylan was born at 2:50 a.m. in the passenger seat.
"The next contraction, he was crowning and not even to the next contraction, he was out," she said.
"So, I looked over and there was a baby on her chest," said Brandon.
Brandon said he called 911, remained calm on the phone with dispatchers, even obeying the speed limit before he pulled over and waited for paramedics and an ambulance.
There is a reason why Shana was so calm. She says she's training to be a doula, which is someone who helps families through childbirth.
"Having that knowledge, you know, behind all of it and knowing it was all so natural," said Shana.
"I'm just glad he wasn't born in Wisconsin," Brandon said. "Two miles short of Wisconsin, but he's still a Minnesota baby."
Shana says she was in labor with her 2-year-old daughter for more than four hours, so she thought she had more time.
Rylan is seven pounds, 10 ounces and is perfectly healthy.
"He had the nickname Baby Twinkle this whole pregnancy," said Shana. "We knew he was a little star in the making, but we figure he's more of a shooting star now, rather than just a regular old one."
