Woodbury's Star Has Family Tradition In Competition
WOODBURY, Minn. (WCCO) -- The state boys basketball tournament starts Wednesday and Woodbury's one of the most intriguing teams.
And one its star players, Renard Suggs, is an athlete with a scorer's mentality. He also has a family tradition for competition.
His father starred at St. Paul Central.
And his cousin is a Super Bowl champion. Baltimore's Terrell Suggs has watched Renard play this season, and it had an impact.
"He had a big influence on my life," Renard said. "He's been a big inspiration, and has reminded me to work hard on the court and in my studies, too."
Woodbury coach Scott Swanson played in the tournament in 1974 for Willmar. His teams have been lighting up the scoreboard this season, at more than 80 points per game.
His squad will match up against another athletic team in Eden Prairie, a squad that appears to be peaking.
"They're going to grind it out and make it hard for us to score," Swanson said.
But it's already a victory to be playing in the state tournament.
"It's been a fun week so far with the school being excited for the game," Suggs said.
