Woman Gets 3 Years For Kidnapping Friend's Baby
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 30-year-old Minneapolis woman who kidnapped her friend's baby back in February, prompting an Amber Alert, was sentenced in Hennepin County Court on Monday.
Isabel Diaz-Castillo was sentenced to three years in prison with credit for 181 days served. She pleaded guilty back in July to one count of kidnapping in connection with the incident. According to charges filed in the case, Diaz-Castillo had be-friended the baby boy's mother about a month before the incident after meeting her at a laundry facility. She had also taken an extreme interest in the baby.
Vicky Orozco, the boy's mother, called police in February after the boy was taken from her south Minneapolis apartment while she was in the shower. Authorities found Diaz-Castillo with the baby in her arms in the basement of her south Minneapolis apartment, according to charges filed in the case.
Diaz-Castillo also had some suitcases packed at her home, and her boyfriend said they were going to be moving at the end of the month. The incident happened after Diaz-Castillo told the boy's mother that she had recently suffered a miscarriage.
Upon finishing her time served, Diaz-Castillo must register in the U.S. as a predatory offender or face deportation.
