Woman, 24, Charged After Allegedly Running Over Woman With Car In Mpls.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Minneapolis woman has been charged with first degree assault after allegedly hitting a woman with her vehicle in downtown Minneapolis early Saturday.
Vanessa Ida Uzong, 24, has been charged with one count of assault in the first degree – great bodily harm.
According to Minneapolis police, the incident happened at around 1 a.m. on the 500 block of Hennepin Avenue South.
Minneapolis police responded to a call of a motor vehicle hitting a pedestrian.
Upon arrival, police witnessed Meira Horton, 26, being put in an ambulance to be taken to the hospital.
Metro Transit Police already had Uzong detained.
According to the criminal complaint, officers learned Uzong was driving a Dodge Magnum that struck Horton while she was walking.
Witnesses told police that there had been a fight between Uzong and Horton and their corresponding groups of friends.
Witnesses said the groups separated and Uzong got into her car and started driving through the parking lot toward where Horton and her friend were walking.
Police said witnesses told them that Horton and her friend attempted to move out of the way but Uzong swerved and hit Horton.
According to the criminal complaint, Uzong dragged Horton until she crashed into another car.
Horton was hospitalized and is in critical condition. She suffered a punctured lung, a lacerated liver, a shattered pelvis, a broken femur and a fractured ankle and ribs.
Uzong is currently in custody.
If found guilty she faced 20 years in prison, a $30,000 fine or both.
The incident happened just minutes before a woman was shot and killed just a block away at a strip club.
