With A Healthy Knee, The Sky's The Limit For Ryan Boldt
RED WING, Minn. (WCCO) -- Ryan Boldt has all the tools -- a strong arm, a good bat, and great speed.
The only thing missing from his resume is his senior season.
That was lost to injury, and maybe his draft status was as well.
But make no mistake he's got quite a future in the game he loves.
"It was tough right away because I didn't know what was going on, and going through my head it was a worst-case scenario," Boldt said. "But once I got to a doctor and got things figured out, the prognosis was better than expected."
But he had already done much to establish himself last summer as a national elite all-star.
"Until I started playing with all the great guys from down south and from California ... it wasn't until then that I realized I could play with these guys," he said.
He grew up in baseball country, as Red Wing has long been known for its amateur team and first-class ball park.
"It's amazing, the support for baseball around here is incredible," he said.
If he doesn't sign with a professional squad, he's got a scholarship to Nebraska. Where the head coach is Darin Erstad, who played the game a little like Boldt.
"He said, 'You remind me of myself,' which is a pretty good compliment for sure for a guy who played in the bigs for so long," Boldt said.
All he needs is a healthy knee and it'll be hard to put a ceiling on him.
"It could have been a lot worse," Boldt said. "I'll get back to 100 percent in a month or two, and we'll see what happens."
