Wisconsin Budget Year Ending With No Agreement In Sight
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin's budget year is ending with no last-minute legislative theatrics or looming government shut-down.
Unlike the federal government, and other states like neighboring Minnesota, when the calendar flips to July in Wisconsin if there is no budget, the spigot of money does not get turned off. Instead, current spending levels continue until the Legislature comes up with a new budget.
There is not time for the Legislature to reach a deal, pass it and have it signed by Wednesday.
Republican state senators did plan to meet for a private caucus on Tuesday to talk about issues that have been holding up passage of the budget. Assembly Republicans were to hold their own meeting on Wednesday.
Gov. Scott Walker has also been meeting with lawmakers to try and reach a deal.
