Wis. Man To Be Sentenced For Killing 3 Daughters
Live Stream: Schaffhausen Sentencing
HUDSON, Wis. (WCCO) -- The man who killed his three daughters in their River Falls, Wis. home will hear his fate on Monday. A sentencing hearing for Aaron Schaffhausen is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Hudson, Wis.
It's been more than a year since Schaffhausen murdered 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia. His conviction on first-degree murder charges carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
Schaffhausen pleaded guilty to killing his three daughters, earlier this year, but his attorneys tried to convince a jury, back in April, that Schaffhausen was insane at the time of the crime.
The insanity trial lasted two weeks with testimony from medical experts, the girls' mother and the babysitter. Ultimately, the jury believed he was sane when he killed the girls.
Twin Cities defense attorney Joe Tamburino, who is not affiliated with the case, believes the judge will hand down the stiffest punishment of consecutive life sentences.
"He murdered them. You can't really get worse than this," said Joe Tamburino, of Caplan and Tamburino Law Firm. "The judge is going to give a reasoning for saying, 'Here's why I'm going to give the sentence I'm going to give.' I don't think that's going to be a long talk, a long discussion, but I think the judge is going to pinpoint certain things about the case where he's going to say, here's why you deserve this sentence."
Monday's hearing is expected to last three hours. Schaffhausen's attorneys have said they will appeal.
