What's That Sound? Thursday Is Tornado Drill Day

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Severe weather season is just around the corner and some people have already experience it -- so Thursday is Tornado Drill Day in Minnesota. That means sirens will be sounded in virtually every community throughout the state.
The National Weather Service will issue simulated tornado watches and warnings. Sirens will be sounded at 1:45 p.m. and again shortly before 7 p.m.
"Last year (Minnesota) actually led the country, for the first time ever, with 113 tornadoes," said Todd Krause of the NWS.

This is the time of year when tornadoes start to appear.
"We'll usually get tornadoes starting sometime, maybe one or two in April, and then a few more in the month of May. So, the month of May is when they really start ramping up," said Krause.
In addition to the sirens, weather alert radios will also be activated for the practice sessions.
