Wet, Sloppy Snow Made It Hard For Minn. Commuters
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- While some folks were enjoying the snow, those who had to try to get around in it Wednesday were not as happy.
The unique combination of temperatures right at freezing and the mixture of snow and rain created some unique hazards for Minnesota commuters.
For only the second time since the light rail system began running seven years ago, so much ice accumulated on cables that two trains got stuck last night.
"The ice was building up so quickly the four trains couldn't clear all the ice," said John Humphrey of Metro Transit.
The commute in the metro was especially bad this morning with slushy conditions leading to 139 spinouts and 73 crashes.
Just walking around was tricky and more than a few of us crashed on foot.
The further south you went in the metro, the slushier it became, with cars having to made their way through standing water.
Shoveling that wet snow for Chet Sroka in Saint Anthony was not an easy task.
"It's very heavy and wet. That is all I can say about it," said Sroka.
Wednesday afternoon's commute went a lot better, according to the State Patrol.
