Welch Slowly Recovering from Floods

WELCH, Minn. (WCCO) - People in Cannon Valley are slowly recovering after torrential rain left roads underwater, basements flooded and farm fields soaked.

For Ross Nelson, who lives next to the Cannon River in Welch, has been involved in several clean-ups.

"We got some water in the basement. We've cleaned out three basements since Friday's flood," said Nelson.

Last week torrential rain dropped nearly 9 inches in the Goodhue County area.

On Monday, the National Weather Service said Goodhue picked up between 2 to 3 inches of rain from Sunday night into Monday morning.

The storms triggered flood watch warnings for Red Wing, Vermilion and Welch.

Hopefully it won't go up any higher that it is now," said Nelson.

Nelson also owns Welch Mille Canoe, a raft and canoe rental shop. He lost one boat on Monday when the river rose.

"I wasn't even around when the flood hit," said Nelson. "So my wife, children and neighbors did everything they could to help get the canoes up."

Driving south on Country Road 7 you can see flooded farm fields and driveways submerged in a few feet of water. Four miles south of County Road 7 the dirt underneath the asphalt was washed away, causing a partial sinkhole.

"We were here Thursday and Friday and fixed it up… we got more rain and then it washed out again," said Lowell Sjodin, as he worked on the road.

Sjodin expects the road to be back open Tuesday evening.

Mitch Jackson, who lives along the Cannon River, has been busy helping his neighbors and family clean up since last week.

"There's not much you can do. Mother nature will take care of it," said Jackson.
