Wright County Sheriff Warns Of Tax Phone Scams
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – With tax season here, a lot of scammers are hoping to get your hard-earned money.
The Wright County Sheriff's Office said it's received about 20 calls a day stating supposed IRS employee are threatening to arrest people over unpaid taxes.
The Sheriff's Office said the scammers are getting more sophisticated.
Often times they know your name, address and other personal information, like the last four digits of a social security number.
If you receive this type of phone call, the IRS said to hang up and report the call. The agency will never ask for payment over the phone or threaten to bring in police.
Since 2013, scam victims have paid out more than $26 million to scammers.
