Walk-Out Expected At Washburn H.S. Monday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Some Minneapolis high school students could be planning to walk out of school Monday to show their support for a faculty member who may be about to be fired.

School administrators at Washburn High School have declared a code yellow alert, which typically means there's a perceived security threat at the school.

Last week, the school's principal told parents that staff anticipated students and alumni may join together today to participate in a walk out in support of the school's athletic director Dan Pratt.

According to reports, students claim Pratt has been told he is being fired. WCCO interviewed Pratt a couple of times last year related to the new athletic field they were putting in at Washburn.

The school says Pratt is being investigated for a "private personnel matter."

Students say his potential firing has to do with if he got proper approvals for a scoreboard that was to be installed when the school's athletic field was renovated.

The school has said if students do walk out today they will not only not be allowed to return to school but they will also have to miss any after school activities as well.

The district issued a statement Sunday night that said any decision to do with Pratt's employment will be made solely by the district and won't be influenced by a demonstration, no matter how many people show up in support.
