Volunteers Surpass 1.6 Million Sandbags In Fargo
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Volunteers have filled more than 1.6 million sandbags this month in hopes of protecting homes and businesses from a rising Red River in Fargo and Moorhead, Minn.
City officials said Wednesday that the second round of sandbagging ended with 613,000 additional bags filled at Sandbag Central. More than a million sandbags already had been filled earlier in the month, but officials asked for help filling more after the National Weather Service predicted that the river might swell higher than originally expected.
The metropolitan area of about 200,000 homes is preparing for a flood potentially in the 40-foot range, or about 22 feet above the point where the river spills its banks.
