Visitors Urged To Stay Off Ice In Voyageurs Park
INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Officials are warning visitors to stay off the ice in Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota.
Ice conditions are rapidly deteriorating in the park along the U.S.-Canadian border, thanks to warm temperatures and sunny weather.
Park staff are concerned the poor ice conditions may make it difficult to quickly rescue someone.
Last weekend, park visitors traveling on the ice escaped serious injury when their all-terrain vehicles broke through the ice.
On Friday, two visitors were traveling on a four-wheeler east of Wolf Island when their ATV broke through the ice. They were able to jump off the ATV and crawl to thicker ice.
Park rangers got a report Saturday that an ATV broke through the ice between Lake Kabetogama and Namakan Lake. The five riders, including three children, jumped off.
