Vikings Sign Safety Smith
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (WCCO/AP) – Harrison Smith becomes the eight member of a 10-member 2012 draft class to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.
Smith, a Notre Dame-grad, was selected as the 29th choice in the first round after making a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. The Vikings announced the signing of the 4-year deal on Friday without disclosing terms.
He becomes the third player from Notre Dame to be selected by the Vikings in the first round, after Jack Snow ('65) and Alan Page ('67).
Smith is expected to challenge for a starting spot in Minnesota's inexperienced defensive backfield.
First-round pick Matt Kalil and third-rounder Josh Robinson are the only remaining Vikings draft picks who have yet to sign a contract. Both have been participating in voluntary practices this week at the team's headquarters.
