Vikings' QB Joe Webb Strives For Leadership
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (WCCO) - Christian Ponder is the man in charge of the Vikings offense. He is being groomed as the team's leader as well.
And right behind Ponder on the depth chart is Joe Webb, an interesting prospect since he came into the league.
Webb is a fascinating study in raw athletic ability. He is also one play away from becoming the most important player on the Vikings football team.
As the back-up quarterback he keeps progressing, trying to master one of the most difficult positions in sport.
"You got to make sure you stay on top of your game, you know. You got to be sure to watch films, study yourself, study your opponent, get to know your teammates, know your receivers. It's a lot to the position, so you got to make sure you stay on top of it," said Webb.
He's shown enough signs over the years to prove he's got NFL skill, but can he convert it into consistency?
Vikings Offensive Coordinator Bill Musgrave sees this potential.
"Joe's making strides every day. The other night, he missed on a couple of throws he'd like to have back, but he did some good things for us too. He made some plays with is legs when we spread him out and got everybody out of the back field," said Musgrave.
Running the football and running the football team are two different things. But for Joe Webb, running the football might be the most important thing he brings to running the football team.
"God blessed me with the ability…so I'm going to take full advantage of that," he said.
And while he is a quarterback, it's that same attribute of athleticism that makes him a possible receiver as well.
'Anytime you can be on the field, that's a positive, you know. I'm a team player. I try to do whatever it takes to help us win," he said.
