Victim Of Kayaking Accident Identified
WASHBURN, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities have identified the man who died after his kayak capsized in Lake Superior while on a trip with his brother and two college friends.
Bayfield County sheriff's officials say 20-year-old Kevin Dammen of Austin, Minn. and the others encountered 4-foot waves after they left Little Sand Bay Tuesday. The waves submerged one of the kayaks, and as the other three turned around to help, Dammen's kayak capsized. Deputies say Dammen directed the two still in their kayaks to help the other person in the water. As they paddled to a nearby island, they lost sight of Dammen.
The Duluth News Tribune says the U.S. Coast Guard found Dammen about 8 p.m. after he was in the water for several hours. Chief Sheriff's Deputy Dan Clark says Lake Superior, even on a hot day, can cause hypothermia in about 30 minutes.
