Unanswered Questions After MPD's Update On Deadly Uptown Events
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There are still a lot of questions after Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau held a press conference on last Friday's deadly events in Uptown.
What Harteau did talk about was the crash between the motorcycle and the squad SUV, which killed the motorcyclist Ivan Romero Oliveres and left his girlfriend, who was a passenger, injured.
At the press conference, Harteau said half of Minneapolis squad vehicles are equipped with a digital video and data system that can determine the exact speed that a squad is going, and whether it had a red or green light. She says the squad did have a red light and its sirens on, but it was not going as fast as reported.
"It's out there that the squad's going 40 to 50 mph through the intersection for people who were just standing on the corner," Harteau said. "The reality is that we use scientific data and GPS, and it says 16 to 17 mph as he entered the intersection. That will not change regardless. That is the fact on our data."
Harteau said she will not talk about the deadly shootings until she has all the information.
So far, there have been no interviews of the police officers in question.
Harteau said the two officers who were wounded in the leg have not been interviewed because they are on medication and the driver of the SUV has not been talked to because he has been too shaken up.
Meanwhile, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner released the cause of death of 22-year-old Terrance Franklin, who was killed in the Uptown shooting, saying he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
