U Board Of Regents To Vote On Alcohol Wednesday
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Sports fans have been thirsty for a change in the drinking rules at University of Minnesota sporting events and on Wednesday, they just may get what they want.
The Board of Regents at the U of M will vote on a final plan to allow alcohol at TCF Bank Stadium during football games, according to officials.
Details of the plan show that beer and wine would be sold at the home for Gopher football starting an hour before kickoff and through halftime of football games. Hard liquor will not be sold in any capacity at the stadium. Alcohol would also be sold in premium seating areas at Williams Arena and Mariucci Arena for other Gopher sports.
Patrons will be limited to two beers per purchase at TCF Bank Stadium and they'll be sold at a tent set up at the west end of the stadium, but patrons will be allowed to bring the beverages to their seats.
"Certainly we will be assessing after each and every game of how it went that game and after the two years," said Amy Phenix, the U of M President's chief of staff. "We will absolutely adjust as necessary, at the next game."
If it's approved, it would last for two years.
The measures are being taken to allow alcohol in a limited capacity to attract more fans to Gopher football games and in preparation for when the Vikings play there while their new stadium is being built.
