Led by top pitching prospect Tyler Guerin, Mounds View seeks to end state title drought
MOUNDS VIEW, Minn. — "I've always loved pitching," said Mounds View senior Tyler Guerin.
The Mustangs ace is figuratively and literally head and shoulders above his competition.
"My parents and family used to call me baby giraffe," said the 6'7" pitcher. "I was kind of lanky and all over the place. And once I kind of grew into my body and I guess started just lifting weights and working on my mobility, I just got to be a better pitcher and just more in control of myself."
Despite his height, Guerin throws with a low, three-quarter arm slot. He's one of the best prep prospects in Minnesota. According to some rankers, the best.
"All my friends, they kind of give me crap because I'm one on PG (Perfect Game) but I'm like three on PBR (Prep Baseball Report)," he said.
"If you sit as close to your ceiling as you can, good things happen because confidence comes with that," said Mounds View head coach Nik Anderson. "Tyler's got that."
Guerin will join his brother on the Iowa baseball team next year. Before that, his Mustangs aim to end a 10-year state championship drought.
"My mindset up there is to just battle," said Guerin. "I like getting ahead in counts because I feel like I'm not really hittable if I'm ahead."
