Twins Trade Span To Nationals For Right-Handed Minor League Pitcher
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- After being in the trade rumor mill for months, Denard Span is no longer a Minnesota Twin.
The Twins acquired right-handed pitcher Alex Meyer on Thursday from the Washington Nationals in exchange for the speedy center fielder.
Meyer, 22, was drafted 23rd overall by the Nationals in the 2011 draft out of the University of Kentucky.
The 6-foot-9-inch, 220-pound right-hander was 10-6 with a 2.86 ERA in 25 starts playing for two Single-A ballclubs.
The Indiana native was selected to play in the Futures Game in Kansas City this past season, and was named the sixth-best prospect in the Nationals organization by Baseball America.
Span, who came out of the 2002 draft, hit .284 over five major league seasons with the Twins.
