Twins De-Winterize Target Field
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) –- Despite the cool weather and the threat of snow, Target Field will be playable for both the Gophers, who play this weekend, and the Twins, whose home opener is scheduled for April 8.
Fighting the forces of nature, Larry DiVito, the Target Field groundskeeper, has put in 12-to 15-hour days growing grass under large blankets to ensure that both teams can play no matter the conditions.
"Hopefully it will surprise some people," DiVito said. "It's looking pretty good under the blankets, so we're happy with it."
He said the grass is greening up nicely and that the large white tarps on top of the grass create a greenhouse effect that keep it warm and help it grow.
"You have to prepare for the worst," said Kevin Smith, the Twins director of public affairs.
He said last year's season was magical, but that that might not be the case this year. Therefore, the Twins are taking every precaution to make sure players and fans are comfortable.
