Trump To Campaign In Wisconsin Tuesday
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Donald Trump campaign is reshuffling its final week schedule to include Eau Claire, Wisconsin Tuesday.
The Republican nominee for president is telling supporters at campaign rallies he thinks Minnesota is within his reach,
"A state which we could actually win," Trump told a campaign rally in Arizona Sunday. "We can win Minnesota."
The Trump campaign may see an opening in blue collar Wisconsin, which it previously thought was unwinnable. It's after the FBI announced it is taking a new look at emails that could be related to Hillary Clinton's use of a private server when she was Secretary of State.
"They probably think they have an outside chance here," University of Wisconsin River Falls political science professor Neil Kraus said.
Kraus says even though public polls show Clinton with a steady lead, Badger State voters are famously independent.
"It kind of lends itself to outsider-type candidates -- candidates who don't really fit in with a typical Republican, a typical Democrat," he said. "If you look at the history of Wisconsin, it has elected some folks really all over the political spectrum-- Probably even more so than Minnesota."
Clinton has not visited Wisconsin during the campaign, and only started running television ads this weekend, but it's political ground zero Tuesday. Besides Trump and running mate Mike Pence in Eau Claire, Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine is in Appleton and Madison and former Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders in Milwauke.
The Real Clear Politics average of polls puts Clinton up by 5.7 points in Wisconsin, and the state hasn't voted for a Republican for President since Ronald Reagan in 1984.
Nationwide, the polls are getting tighter but Trump is trailing in battleground states he needs to win.
Trump this week is focusing on traditionally blue states like Wisconsin and Michigan, but also Colorado and New Mexico. Clinton is spending a lot of time in North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.
