Top Minn. Senator Presses Education Levy Buyoff
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A top Minnesota Senate Democrat is out with his plan to chop property taxes by $150 million by having the state assume some school costs now picked up on the local level.
The proposal from Sen. LeRoy Stumpf of Plummer would buy off levies in every school district. For most, it won't mean new dollars but it would give their property tax payers more breathing room. A smattering of districts would see up to $35 more per child added to their state education allowance.
But there's a catch: The plan brings back a statewide general education levy that was previously repealed. For now, it would generate $20 million. But business groups are speaking against the plan, expressing concern that the revived general education levy will rise in the future.
