Toning Shoes Could Be A Pain For Your Feet
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- You've likely seen the commercials or tried them out. Toning shoes promise a lift to problem places, like legs, hips and even your butt. But doctors are warning that those popular shoes could be doing more harm than good.
While the soles of the shoes are extra thick and some say that's really comfortable, but doctors claim that's where the problem lies.
Dr. Long Le with Midwest Foot & Ankle Specialists says the shoes create a rocking motion that isn't natural.
"I had a couple patients that come in saying these are the worst shoes they've ever had," said Le. "I've seen people come in with complaints of planter fasciitis and tendonitis in their feet from wearing these shoes for maybe just a weekend."
One condition impacts the top of the foot, the other your heel.
"It's a very debilitating condition where it's painful to walk on your feet," Le said.
Some patients have also complained of joint pain.
"We've treated them the proper way, told them to get rid of the shoes and try wearing a good running shoe," Le said.
But the doctor's recommendation has tough competition from the marketing of these shoes, which are made by a number of companies.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received nearly 30 complaints about the shoes in the last two months. If you want to check out the complaints and how companies are responding to them, click on the link below.
