Tommies Blog: UST Wins Opener Over St. Norbert
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Dakota Tracy is expected to be a leader of the St. Thomas offense this season, and the quarterback played like it on Saturday as the Tommies beat St. Norbert (Wis.) 20-7 in the season opener for both teams at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.
Tracy passed for 336 yards and a touchdown and also ran for two touchdowns in the Tommies victory. The win gives Glenn Caruso a 31-6 mark as head coach since taking over the job four seasons ago.
St. Norbert got on the board first to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but St. Thomas answered with the next 20 points. Tracy had a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to tie the game 7-7 and scored again late in the third quarter from 1 yard out to give the Tommies a 20-7 lead.
That scoring drive was set up after Jack Gavin intercepted a pass and returned it 17 yards. Tracy's score came four plays later.
Senior wide receiver Fritz Waldvogel also scored on a pass from 62 yards out on a pass from Tracy to give the Tommies a 13-7 lead in the second quarter. Waldvogel finished with seven catches for 144 yards.
