Tommies Blog: Tobin, Waldvogel Lead St. Thomas Past Monmouth
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The St. Thomas football team recovered from three first-half turnovers to score 28 points in the second half and beat Monmouth College (Ill.) 38-10 on Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.
The Tommies, 12-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation, advance to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals next Saturday, and they will likely have another home game. St. John Fisher (10-2) upset Delaware Valley 27-14. St. Thomas should find out Sunday where next week's game will be played.
St. Thomas had potential scoring drives halted on an interception and two fumbles in the first half, but Fritz Waldvogel gave the team the boost it needed.
Waldvogel returned the second half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, giving the Tommies a 17-10 lead. Colin Tobin added touchdown runs of 15 yards in the third quarter and 5 yards in the fourth quarter. Waldvogel added a 48-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Tommies a 38-10 lead.
Tobin finished with 250 yards rushing and two scores in the win. Waldvogel had six catches for 148 yards and a touchdown in the win and added the special teams touchdown. Dakota Tracy passed for 159 yards and added 59 rushing yards and a touchdown in the game.
The St. Thomas defense had five sacks in the game, three of which came from sophomore linebacker Tremayne Williams. Josh Carey led the Tommies' defense with seven tackles.
St. Thomas will face St. John Fisher next Saturday. The game's time and location have not yet been determined, but the Tommies will likely be at home.
