Tommies Blog: St. Thomas Beats Carleton To Win MIAC
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The St. Thomas football team rolled to a 56-0 win over Carleton on Saturday in its regular season finale in Northfield.
The win lets the Tommies clinch the MIAC title for the second straight season with a 10-0 record. The Tommies, ranked No. 3 nationally, will host a first-round playoff game in two weeks as they have a bye next week while other teams finish up the regular season.
St. Thomas put away Carleton early in Northfield with 42 first half points, allowing the reserves to play most of the second half. Colin Tobin ran for 147 yards and a touchdown, and Aaron Terrell-Byrd also had 117 yards and a touchdown on the ground in the win.
The Tommies had more than 300 yards rushing before the end of the first half in the victory. Dakota Tracy passed for 58 yards and a touchdown on six completions in the victory.
Ricky Margarit scored on a 6-yard run to get the Tommies on the board in the opening quarter. Later in the second, St. Thomas used a bit of trickery to take a 15-0 lead. Bill Moritz faked a punt and found Fritz Waldvogel on a 51-yard touchdown pass.
The Tommies scored 27 points in the second quarter and were in control the rest of the afternoon.
In other MIAC action Saturday, St. Olaf's playoff chances were dealt a blow after the Oles lost at St. John's 27-24. Bethel, the other team will legitimate postseason aspirations, beat Hamline 33-6. The Royals travel to Augsburg next week, and Oles face a must-win, hosting Concordia.
St. Thomas will host a first-round NCAA Playoff game on Saturday, Nov. 19 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium with the opponent and time to be determined. Those details will be made available sometime after the completion of next weekend's games.
